Some IT Skills in Short Supply

Everyone’s daily lives are affected by IT. IT , computer systems , Apps  etc have become a central part of  everyday life – but there is a danger of a shortage of skilled people to look after these IT systems to maintain security and software.

The employment of ICT specialists has grown by around 2 million in the EU over last 10 years, but the European Union is facing shortages of around  370,000 in 2017 which is likely to grow by up to 500,000 in 2020 as the demand for highly-skilled ICT professionals is exceeds supply .  It is predicted that  there could be approximately 825,000 ICT vacancies in  EU in 2020 !

Only this  year – (better late then never) it was announced that Computer Science would be in the Leaving Cert exam in Ireland in  2018.

Digital skills are now recognised as essential skills, along with literacy and numeracy.   A ” National Digital Skills and Jobs Coalition” has been launched in Ireland to help support Ireland’s continuing economic progress and competitiveness.
Job growth is largest in highly skilled jobs, such as management, architecture and analytics positions.

HGV Drivers and Deboners wanted in Ireland

New Employment Permits Regulations  came into force in Ireland on the 3rd April 2017 that will make it easier for lecturers , HGV Drivers and Meat Deboners to get jobs in Ireland.

These regulations saw changes to the Highly Skilled Eligible Occupations List (HSEOL)
The following categories of jobs were added to the list of  Highly skilled occupations in short supply

Academics who hold a qualification equivalent to NFQ Level 10 in a given discipline awarded no less than two calendar years prior to the date of application for an employment permit, with a minimum of one academic year of relevant teaching experience, and the employment concerned is in an Irish University or Institute of Technology.


Ineligible Categories of Employment List ICEL

General skills in short supply – The following jobs are now  exempt from the ICEL list on a temporary basis.

HGV drivers who have a CE or C1E driving licence and subject to a maximum quota of 120 General Employment Permits.
Meat Deboners continue to be exempt and a second tranche of a 160 General Employment Permits maximum quota is released.

FAS Jobs replaced by JobsIreland.ie

The new one stop service for Jobseekers in Ireland is called INTREO  and it provides access to information on job vacancies in Ireland  through the website www.jobsireland.ie.  This replaced the old FAS Jobs Bank or Jobseeker website.

Evo – the card payment service provider based in Dun Laoghaire will be taking on 50 new staff in 2017

Overcast – the Dublin based online video specialists have announced plans to hire 70 new staff over the next 3 years.

Pharmaceutical company IQ Pharmatek based in Clonmel have announced 200 new jobs , 100 in 2017 and 100 in 2018. They carry out of contract manufacturing for third parties for export to other European countries, North America and the Far East.

Nostra – based in Lucan are looking for staff in sales and computer engineering.

Tech Mahindra – is an IT services company in Citywest Dublin. They say they are creating 150 jobs in the next 3 years –  They say the offer ” innovative and customer-centric information technology services and solutions, ”

Work as Airline Cabin Crew in Ireland

Aer Lingus recently launched their 2017  Cabin Crew recruitment campaign for their Dublin base. At Aer Lingus ,  cabin crew  can potentially earn between €1,700 and €1,900 monthly take home pay.

Cabin crew training is provided at their  in-house Training Academy, Iolar House, located in the heart of Dublin Airport. You get paid while you train

Throughout your training you will learn a wide range of topics from theoretical and practical components, health and safety procedures through to grooming and guest experience.

The training process is quite intense, both in theory and practice. After six weeks at the Aer Lingus Training Academy where you receive training in areas such as first aid, CPR, emergency landing and firefighting drills, you will officially become a member of Aer Lingus cabin crew

To be considered for cabin crew job at Aer Lingus you need to be :
Over 18 years of age
Eligible to live and work in the Republic of Ireland without restriction
Have 12 months experience in a face to face customer service/sales role
Be fluent in English, both spoken and written.
Hold a valid EEA passport allowing unrestricted worldwide travel
No tattoos/piercing visible when in Aer Lingus uniform
Flexibility to work shifts, unsociable hours, weekends, holidays and overnights

Ryanair also have Dublin based cabin crew . They outsource the cabin crew recruitment and training to 2 separate companies.

Training courses for Ryanair cabin crew are full-time, Monday-Friday, for a period of about 5-6 weeks. (Some evening and weekend training may be required.)

Trainees for Ryanair  have to pay a fee to be trained – and they are not cheap.

The cheapest option is to pay in Advance  – You end up having to pay a Registration Fee of €500.00  , course fee of €2,199.00 plus accommodation costs of €700.00   That’s a total of €3,399 – and if you don’t pass , none of it is refundable.
