Transfering Jobseekers Benefit Abroad

With the current employment problems for many people in Ireland – some of you may be thinking of moving to the UK or elsewhere in the EU to look for work.
The good news is that anyone claiming Jobseekers Benefit can continue to get payments from Ireland for up to 13 weeks when you go to another EU country to look for a job.

You must be getting Jobseeker’s Benefit for 4 weeks before you can transfer it to another EEA member state. If you apply to transfer your Jobseeker’s Benefit, it will be paid directly to you – (bank account) . You will still be required to register with the employment services of the country where you have gone to look for work within a week of arriving .
You need to get a “Form U2“   from your Social Welfare office and bring it  to the employment  services of the country you are travelling to.
You can get a completed Form U2 from your local social welfare office.

The 13-week period of payment may be extended to 6 months in
exceptional circumstances. Also you may now transfer your JB payment more than once while you are unemployed provided you do not exceed the maximum period of 13 weeks

If you went to the UK without a U2 form – you will probably experience delays in getting UK  Jobseekers Benefits – and when you get it the rates are much lower in the UK.
For example – over 25 Single – UK rate is  £65.45  (about €78 Euro)  The   Irish Rate is €188 Euro – more than double!

Note:  Jobseekers Allowance is not payable outside Ireland – ! You can go on holiday for a maximum of 2 weeks and your Jobseekers Allowance will be paid when you return. You must notify your social welfare local office in advance of taking your 2 weeks holiday. It can also be paid on your return from representing Ireland in an amateur capacity an international sporting event.

Internship Scheme Ireland

A new National Internship Scheme is being launched in July 2011.  The new Job Bridge website will show all the available internships -  eventually .
An internship can be a good way for people  to gain  experience in a working environment and to gain some relevant knowledge and skills required for  a particular career .

The internships will be  for a 6 month or 9 month period and  Interns will receive an allowance of €50 per week on top of their social welfare entitlement.

To be eligible for a place as an intern you must be unemployed and in receipt of Jobseekers Benefit, Jobseekers Allowance or signing for Social Insurance Contribution Credits for 3 months or more .

To try and prevent employers treating it as a free labour scheme – there are some rules in place.

The host organisation currently may not have vacancies in the area of activity in which the internship is offered.

Also the internship will not be provided to displace an employee. The scheme administrator reserves the right to review cases where it is reported that this is the case.

Jobbridge.ie  is the Internship website.
They could have chosen a better name – there is already a JobsBridge website that belongs to a US jobs site. Many people are looking for jobsbridge.ie and finding nothing.

FAS Can Make Unemployment Worse

In Ireland a report into  how State agencies encourage and assist the unemployed  to return to work has found that they can have the opposite effect .

The report,by the Economic and Social Research Institute (ESRI) says that those who are assisted by the State while on the dole were less likely to return to work than the average welfare recipient.

They found that participation in programmes run by FAS  increased the probability of subsequent employment by between 10 and 14 per cent.

However, Fás “activation interviews” with jobseekers resulted in the  chances of entering employment being about 17 per cent lower for those who went through the interview process.
Overall – the effect of FAS  was either zero, or at best weakly positive.

One strange rule in FAS  – is that someone  losing a job who had claimed unemployment benefit in the past is excluded from getting  assistance in job searches and training.

Another failing identified was that one in four of those unemployed people eligible for assistance by the State  were not  identified . Poor communications between the Department of Social Protection and FAS are  the primary reason for this.

Recruit Ireland – Irish Jobs Site Hacked

A major Irish jobs site has had to go offline temporarily because of a data breach.  RecruitIreland.com  say they ” have taken the website offline as a result of a data breach; we are doing everything necessary to have the website back up and running as soon as possible, please bear with us.

As per our security guidelines and structures, we have a process in place for eventualities such as this; when we were notified we shut down the server and the database to prevent any access.

The present indicators are that our database was breached to get email addresses and names for spamming. We shut down access to the site and database at 2pm on Feb 8th and immediately informed the Data Protection Commissioner and the Gardai.

Getting a Job – Top 5 Tips

1. Get back in touch with your old college to see if they have an  job placement scheme. If you’re serious about finding work you should leave no stone unturned.

2. Take some classes. Today’s emphasis on lifelong learning means you need to show you are someone who wants to learn new things.  Anything is better than doing nothing – Sport or exercise can get you fit; practical skills will gain you confidence, languages can widen your world and academic subjects will boost your CV. It can give you a whole new outlook on life and work

3 Think about the future. Some industries, like energy and healthcare, are likely to have huge demands for jobs in future.  Do your research to find out where these gaps will be and if it is an industry that you would be interested in.

4 Create your own job. Consider starting your own business, either consulting for your current field, or doing something entirely new.

5.  Don’t give up. It may take a while, but the perfect job for you is out there. Remember you are not alone, – Many people have been where you are now, and, if you talked to them, they would urge to not to stop. Be clear on what you want, believe in yourself and keep going.
